Historic Southwest Neighborhood Sign Toppers

Rochester, Minnesota's Historic Southwest Neighborhood Association, reached out to me for assistance in the support of their vision. Their vision was to create Sign Toppers which would serve the community as neighbor district landmarking signage. This video presents the design process from beginning concept to the near-final design selected for production.

When I was approached by Historic Southwest Neighborhood Association I had no idea that this project would lead to such a successful outcome. Created in partnership with a neighborhood committee this project was green-lighted with the approval of a grant from Rochester Area Neighbor Foundation. 15 total Street Sign Toppers were installed by Rochester City Works Department are now seen around Southwest Rochester, Minnesota.

In March 2017, Dennis Davey, president of Historic Southwest Neighborhood Association (HSNA), reached out to me for assistance in the support of their vision. Their vision, was to create street sign toppers which would serve the community as neighborhood landmark signage. HSNA applied and was awarded a grant from RNeighbors. Per the requirements of the grant and the details needed to complete the project HSNA formed a Sign Committee. My responsibilities to the committee included, reaching out to perceptive vendors, recommendation of materials, creation of the custom shape, assist with the project timetable, and, if granted, an opportunity to enter a design for the consideration.

In total over eight version of the art was review with multiple icons. The art was generated in Adobe Illustrator as that is an industry standard for vector graphics in sign design. From project inception to completion this took approximately 8 months to narrow it down to what the same we see in our neighborhoods today.
